Christmas in Sipaliwini

Christmas in Suriname is always about food & family. But this year I felt that it was time for a change…..

So before I start, I should mention that Surinamese people have some superstitious beliefs about going to the interior in December. Don’t ask me where those superstitions came from cause I have no idea….

The resort I went to is called Kumalu dream island. In total it’s about a 6 to 8 hour journey from the city (depending on your speed & the water level).

Kumalu is a beautiful island that has cabana’s, hammock camps, a kitchen/eating camp and a toilet/shower building. Everything is nice and clean & there’s a nice lady that makes sure it stays that way. Oh and did I mention that they have electricity the whole day & night.

We all have Christmas traditions but at some point you have to go out and start your own traditions….so that’s exactly what I did. Christmas in Sipaliwini is so relaxing and honestly much better than Christmas in the city. In the city there’s always a rush while in the interior, all there is to do is go for a swim in the river, go on a hike with the guide and just relax.

I went to Kumalu with a tour company (contact me for more info) & they had a lot of activities planned for the whole weekend but this time I just didn’t want to do anything. I spent the whole weekend eating, swimming, meditating, taking pictures & videos and just going with the flow and listening to what my body was telling me it wanted to do. The activities that are included in the Kumalu trip are going to the Tapawatra falls & hiking to pineapple mountain (both of which I already did once before).

Christmas day doesn’t really feel like christmas in the interior. It was just another normal saturday and although there were a lot of activities I just spent the whole day relaxing and swimming. I have to be completely honest, I did really miss the traditional Christmas turkey & ham! And there were some encounters with snakes in the area of (close to) my hammock & blood sucking bats (they didn’t suck my blood tho)….but that’s all part of the adventure and why I go on these trips.

Kumalu dream island is a resort I definitely recommend visiting if you want that nice balance between adventure & comfort. If you want to know more about how & where I booked my trip, feel free to contact me.

Let me end by wishing you a HAPPY NEW YEAR! Keep following my blog & my social media cause there is A LOT MORE & INTERNATIONAL content coming in 2022! But until then, there’s more Suriname content I’m currently working on so STAY TUNED!
