If you’re someone who thrives on the thrill of new experiences and loves the challenge of exploring while watching the expenses, then this blog post is tailor-made for your adventurous spirit! Get ready as I give you a list of wallet-friendly day trips that will ignite your passion for exploration right here in Suriname.
1. Brownsberg Nature Park
Brownsberg Nature Park is home to waterfalls, animals & a lot of untouched rainforest. Upon arrival, you get a guide who then takes you to a waterfall of your choosing. I highly recommend you take a day trip with a tour company. This way you don’t have to arrange anything and the tour company offers food & drinks as well. (Contact me for more info on which tour company I use)
2. Peperpot Nature Park
Peperpot Nature Park is also a very fun choice for a day trip. Located in the Commewijne district, Peperpot Nature Park offers various activities like kayaking, cycling through the park, going for a hike on one of their many trails through the forest & more. The best part is that at the end of the activities you can drive to Boutique Hotel Peperpot to relax, go for a swim & get delicious food & drinks.
3. Fort New Amsterdam & Plantation Resort Frederiksdorp
Commewijne has a lot to offer and you can really fill your whole day by just driving around this beautiful district. The places you definitely need to visit are Fort New Amsterdam (to learn more about Surinamese history & culture) & Plantation resort Frederiksdorp (make sure to book their plantation tour where they take you to visit all the other plantations in the area).

4. The warungs at Tamanredjo
If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll definitely want to visit the warungs (javanese restaurants) at Tamanredjo. What I like to do is stop at every single one of them and order different menu items at each one. It’s a great, fun & delicious way to pass the time and get to know Surinamese Javanese food better.
5. Afobaka Resort
Afobaka Resort is the perfect resort for day trips and overnight stays. They offer a variety of activities, and the food is delicious every time. They also have a new riverside lodge, called the Lio Lodge, that has its own private beach. The best part about it is you’re surrounded by nature while not having to drive that far from the city.
6. Braamspunt sea turtle tour
The Braamspunt sea turtle tour is an awesome experience and I highly recommend going. I wouldn’t recommend doing this if you’re traveling with small children as it’s an evening/night tour and you have to take a boat to reach Braamspunt.
Here are some more adventurous posts you’re sure to love!
7. Dolphin tour
Dolphin spotting is another fun, family friendly activity that you can do in Suriname.
8. Historical tour of Paramaribo
Paramaribo has a rich history that not many people know about. You can book a historical city tour when you visit the tourist info cabana at Waka Pasi. Get your morning walk in while learning about the history of Suriname.
9. Coronie district
Coronie is know as the coconut district of Suriname. Here you find a lot of stalls where you can buy fresh coconuts, coconut oil and fresh fruits and veggies. Most people visit Coronie for the coconut oil which is used a lot in Suriname for cooking, to put in your hair, to rub on your skin and much more. It’s a trip I personally love going on.
To really understand a country and its cultures, it’s best to avoid the usual tourist spots and explore the places where the locals go. That’s where you can experience the true essence of Suriname!
I’m here to help you every step of the way!
