Let’s be honest, every tourist likes souvenirs….but if you’re anything like me, you’ll want souvenirs that actually mean something, souvenirs that are more than just something you stick on your fridge or put on a shelf. Souvenirs that tell a story. And even if you’re not a tourist, we all love the country we live in & its culture.
Keep reading if you’d like to know which Suriname souvenirs I think you might NEED.
1. Pepper seeds

Surinamese pepper really does hit different. So if you love some heat and extra fragrance in your food, pepper seeds are the best souvenirs cause (if you treat the plant well) it’ll last for years and you’ll always have a piece of Suriname with you.
If you’re not really a fan of pepper, there are a lot of other fruits & veggies you might like to get seeds of.
2. Handmade jewelery
Why not get something you can actually use/wear? When you visit “Waka Pasi” (next to the palm garden) you’ll find a few vendors selling really nice handmade jewelery.

3. Wearable art
Have you ever wanted to buy a painting but you ended up not doing it cause you were afraid it would get damaged while travelling? You don’t have to worry about that any longer! A local artist, Rachel Nijman, can paint anything you’d like onto any piece of clothing, notebook, even shoes & bags! This is especially nice cause you can actually wear your art and get reminded of Suriname every time. Here’s the link to her ig:

4. Headwraps, Shirts & bags from Talking Prints
These items are handmade by locals and they definitely scream Suriname. They have everything from shirts to headwraps. Their Palulu shirt is one of my faves! Search for Talking Prints on social media and take a look at their online shop.

5. Calabash bowls
You can find these at the central market and they can be used as everyday bowls to eat out of.
And last but not least…….
6. Authentic maroon Pangi’s
If you’re planning to go on trips to the interior while you’re in Suriname, you’ll most likely see some maroon women selling beautifully decorated pangi’s. When you buy one they’ll show you how to wear it and it’s one of the best souvenirs you can get.
I hope this inspires you to think out of the box when searching for souvenirs & buy something that’s unique & you can actually use. For more info feel free to send me a DM on instagram or send me a message via the “contact” tab on my website.
