Roaming around Brokopondo

Posted by

·

Brokopondo is the district where you’ll find a lot of different villages, history, culture, some resorts & the Brokopondo Reservoir. The Brokopondo district was founded in 1958 because of the creation of the Brokopondo Reservoir. As a result of the creation of the reservoir, all the villages that were located in that area had to be transmigrated. The people from these villages relocated to new villages along the afobaka-road.

This district is home to the Brownsberg Nature Reserve (which holds several waterfalls and different species of wildlife), Jodensavanne (a historical Jewish site), many resorts & other small holiday spots along the river.

History

Jodensavanne (translation: Jewish savanna) was a Jewish plantation community and for a time it was the center of Jewish life in Suriname. It was established in the 1600’s and is located in the Amerindian village Redi Doti (translation: red dirt).

These days, you can still visit Jodensavanne and take a tour with a guide who can tell you all about its intriguing history. All that remains are the remnants of the synagogue, a few newly discovered foundations of houses and 3 cemeteries.

Villages

There are many villages along the Afobaka Road but only 2 that I personally visited and loved!

  • Klaaskreek
  • Redi Doti

Klaaskreek is one of the many Maroon villages along the Afobaka road. Not many people know that Klaaskreek has 2 BEAUTIFUL beaches! Perfect destination for a roadtrip.

Redi Doti is a Amerindian village that was founded in 1930 when a Roman Catholic church was built there, but in 1828 there were already reports of Amerindian people living near the site of Jodensavanne. Redi Doti is also home to a few swimming spots & the Jodensavanne River Resort, located along the river.

Resorts & day trip places

  • Overbridge River Resort
  • Afobaka Resort
  • Bakaaboto Resort
  • Ston Eiland
  • OWOS (Powakka)
  • Brownsberg Nature Park
  • Brokopondo Reservoir
  • Jodensavanne River Resort

Of course there is MUCH more to do and see but if I list all the options that would take away all the fun of adventure for you!
