If you’re like me and you love learning about different cultures, then Suriname is definitely the place to be! If you know a little about Suriname, you know that it consists of a lot of different cultures, and you might be wondering where to even start. Lucky for you, I’m here to help! Let’s dive in!
To learn more about a country or culture, you start at the market. I went to the Central Market (for the first time) and all I can say is WOW. The market is divided into 2 main halls:
- The vegetable hall: here you can find all the veggies, ground provisions, different nut oils, steamable herbs and even various religious necessities. There’s also an upstairs section where you can buy clothes and different pieces of cloth.
- The meat hall: this is where you buy all your meat and fish.
Wrapped around the outside of the halls there’s a street with various stalls where vendors sell everything from hair and body products to ground provisions and readymade food.

Walking around the Central Market you can really feel Suriname. The people that love cultures just as much as me know what I’m talking about. It can’t really be explained, it needs to be felt.
A trip to the Central Market is definitely the place to start your Suriname adventure!
Important note!
I’m sure there are those among us that would like to go there for content creation purposes. But most people there are not camera friendly. From all corners you can hear people shout that you have to pay them to even be walking around with a camera, let alone point it at them. However, if you have your phone out it doesn’t seem to be a problem.
So, this is just something to keep in mind.
