Let me start by saying that I’m writing this in the summer. Here in Suriname, the weather can get very hot. The past few weeks have been as hot as I imagine hell would be, so I packed a bag, started my car & drove myself to Afobaka Resort.

History
Afobaka Resort is located on the left bank of the Suriname River, in the Brokopondo district of Suriname; not far from the Prof. Van Blommenstein lake. Afobaka Resort is part of the company Para Tours, a subsidiary of Para Group N.V. and the recreation area covers an area of over 50 hectares.
Why Afobaka Resort?
Over the years I’ve been here many times but each time I discover something new that makes me love it even more. Afobaka Resort is a good mix of luxury, nature & adventure. There’s a restaurant on the property (called “Lio”), 8 luxurious cabins of which 2 are being renovated (with wifi, a full kitchen with microwave, living area, AC & hot+cold water) & they offer a few adventurous excursions.
The cabins are perfect for groups both big and small. There are 3 smaller lodges (cozy lodges) with 2 rooms that hold from 4 up to 6 people and 3 bigger ones (family lodges) with 4 rooms that are perfect for big groups or families from 8 up to 16 people. Of course, every extra person pays a small fee. And if you don’t want to stay overnight, you can just take a day pass!

My experience
From the time I got there, the staff was super friendly and helpful, and you can really see their passion for their work. I’m so happy and thankful that they were open & willing to put up with me and my content creating (lol). Now let’s get into the good stuff…..

When the weather gets hot, the only thing that can cool me down is a nice cold coconut! As soon as I got to the restaurant, I got a cold coconut, and it did not disappoint. For lunch I had their “cheesy pizza” which can only be described as 8 slices of heaven. From the perfectly baked thin crust to the 2 cheeses gooeyness on top; needless to say, I enjoyed every bite. Even if you’re lactose intolerant, believe me you’ll want to try it cause the restrooms are close to the restaurant & cleaned thoroughly.
Afobaka Resort is also a great option for families with children. They have a trampoline on the resort & your kids will have plenty of space to run around and tire themselves out. And did I tell you that they have a kids section to their menu? (all contact & menu links are down below)
After lunch & a refreshing dip in the river, at 2pm it was time to check in to my lodge. If you want to see a full view of the lodge & the property, watch the video below:
I love the fact that the AC was on and waiting for me when I got to the lodge! It’s the little details that capture my heart. I immediately put all my electronics to charge, hopped in the shower & enjoyed the AC for the rest of the afternoon. If you watched the video, did you notice that the lodge has everything? Yeah, that’s also what I love about Afobaka Resort, it’s like a home away from home, but better because they come with a waterfall!
P.S. the resort at night is beautiful & perfect for pictures! Just putting you onto another instagramable spot in Suriname, you’re welcome (watch the video above to see the resort at night).
The waterfall

The waterfall was extraordinary! Even though the water level was very low due to the very hot weather, it was an amazing sight to see, and the water was as clean & refreshing as ever! I can only imagine its beauty when the water levels are higher.
I got up at 5:30AM (I almost couldn’t get up cause the bed was so comfy), took a nice hot shower & headed to the beach for some morning shots (camera shots, not alcohol). At 7AM I got picked up at the beach (you get picked up at your cabin too if you prefer that) and we headed to the boat. We got to the waterfall and to my surprise you sail right up to where the waterfall flows into the lake and it’s only a 5-minute walk to the top. We spent about an hour there and headed back to the resort.
By now y’all know that it’s not an adventure if I don’t take the scenic route so the boat ride back took a little longer than it normally would. What I saw along the way was deeply saddening.
Want to know what I saw on the lake? Check out the video below:
Overall, I give Afobaka Resort a 10 out of 10 for everything from their staff to the facilities & excursions.

“Nature is not a resource to exploit for pleasure or profit. We as humans are not separate from or even above nature.
We are a part of it & we are the only things destroying it. Destroying the very things we need to survive, just for earthly possessions, wealth & status.
Disregarding the health of the people who live in the area & ignoring the laws of the forest.
The saddest thing is no one in power is doing anything to stop it.
The deforestation, animal killings & mining continue….”
