Discover Puerto Rico through my 5-day adventure in and around Condado, Old San Juan, and El Yunque. Explore historic forts, vibrant nightlife, delicious food spots, and unforgettable cultural experiences.
A Brief History of Puerto Rico & Its Unique Culture

Puerto Rico’s story is as vibrant as its colorful streets. Once home to the Taíno people, the island became a Spanish colony in 1493 after Christopher Columbus arrived. Over the centuries, Taíno traditions blended with Spanish influence and African heritage, creating a culture like no other in the Caribbean.
From the rhythms of salsa and reggaeton to the scent of sofrito drifting from kitchens, Puerto Rico’s cultural fusion is alive in every corner. Visitors can expect warm hospitality, bold flavors, and a spirit of celebration deeply woven into daily life.
Where We Stayed
I traveled with my mother and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Condado. Condado is a vibrant neighborhood packed with hotels, boutiques, cafés, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean just a short walk away. It’s perfect for travelers who want a lively atmosphere with everything, restaurants, nightlife, and shopping, within easy reach.
Dining Near the Hotel
We were spoiled for choice in Condado. A short walk from our hotel led to a lively strip with shops, restaurants, and bars.
- Pizzella – A cozy pizza spot that quickly became a favorite.
- Tayzan Sushi – Affordable, fresh, and full of flavor.

Exploring Old San Juan
No trip to Puerto Rico is complete without visiting Old San Juan, a historic district filled with pastel colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and centuries-old forts. We wandered its charming alleys, soaking up the history and beauty.
Experiencing the nightlife in Old San Juan is also a must. One highlight for us was El Cafetín, a lively bar that comes alive around 11 p.m. The reason why is best seen in a video on my Instagram , but trust me, the energy is contagious, and it’s a great spot to experience Puerto Rico’s vibrant social scene.
Where to Eat in Old San Juan

- Verde Mesa – Vintage-themed and serving incredible seafood alongside other flavorful dishes. The décor makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
- Pirilo Pizza Rústica – Known for pizza but offering a variety of dishes to suit all tastes.

Activities & Experiences We Loved
Perfume Making at Blanca Fragrance Factory
In Old San Juan, this interactive workshop lets you design your own fragrance, choosing each note with guidance from warm and knowledgeable staff. It’s fun, creative, and leaves you with a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
El Yunque Rainforest Adventure
We joined a waterfall and waterslide tour in El Yunque National Forest with our guide Gian. The short but intense hike included muddy climbs and rocky paths, but the reward was a natural rock waterslide, and waterfall jumps for the adventurous.
Castillo de San Cristóbal
This sprawling fortress is a must-visit. From expansive courtyards to eerie dungeons, walking through its halls truly transports you to another era. Standing atop its walls with panoramic views gave me a new appreciation for history, and for the modern luxury of air conditioning!

Other Activities to Try in Puerto Rico
If you have more time, consider:
- Castillo San Felipe del Morro – Another historic fortress with stunning ocean views.
- Bioluminescent Bay Tour – Paddle through glowing waters in Vieques or Fajardo.
- Coffee Plantation Tours – Taste Puerto Rico’s rich coffee at the source.
- Culebra or Vieques Beaches – Relax on some of the Caribbean’s most pristine shores.
La Perla: From Rough Past to Cultural Gem
I visited La Perla, a colorful neighborhood on Old San Juan’s northern coast. Once infamous, it’s now a vibrant community with beach bars, street art, and oceanfront views. La Perla gained international fame when Despacito was filmed here, yet it still holds onto its authentic, lived-in charm.
Trip Costs
- Flights (through Trinidad): Around USD 740 round-trip per person (prices vary).
- Hotel: at least USD 244 per night at the Holiday Inn Express, including breakfast (prices vary).
Puerto Rico’s Nature Conservation Efforts
Puerto Rico actively protects its natural treasures. Conservation projects restore coral reefs, replant native trees, and regulate tourism in fragile ecosystems like El Yunque and the bioluminescent bays. Sustainable tourism is encouraged to ensure future generations can enjoy the island’s unmatched beauty.
